So after leaving the amazing island of Thassos, we spent a night of luxury in Thessaloniki http://www.domotelleslazaristeshotelthessaloniki.com it was awesome to be able to have a decent bath with the mini cosmetic treat 5 star hotels offer! Only terrible part of staying in a luxury is that they had a scale in the bathroom...5 kilograms LATER I am going to definitely need to curb my food enthusiasm.. But being the master of procrastination, we went and had a delicious dinner at a very eccentric restaurant which offered a huge variety of dishes (see pic of me holding menu). It interesting names for dishes like "transvestite lamb" (which was actually chicken).. and Maria's tits?! We had meltingly tender delicious pork knuckle, a mezze of croquettes, greek meatballs and the most delicious freshly cooked hot mini doughnuts dripping in chocolate.. YUM.
Arrived in Portugal safe and sound, stayed with Henrique's Uncle and Aunt and met some of his family. It's a daunting experience meeting your boyfriends family in any event, so adding the fact that we dont speak the same language made it even more intense! Surprisingly it wasnt as difficult as I imagined, and hospitality is a feeling which can be felt even through language barriers. Its evident that this boy I met has come from a warm and loving family.. which is good because no one wants to have psycopaths as possible in-laws one day.
Did some sight seeing in Lisbon and was surprised at how beautiful it is? Even though Lisbon is fairly dangerous, its very picturesque. They talk about French pastries, but man those Portuguese know about pastries... AMAZING.. the custard tart things are to die for and I totally love that you go into these bustling busy places where you can chose between about 100 different savoury or sweet pastries and just prop yourself up on ledge against the wall and have a little mid day/work/night/morning snack! These pastry shops are also on like every street corner and some. Had the most delicious Prego roll EVER, at a place which was one of those "local" places which a tourist would never find. The cook the steaks in lashings of garlic, butter and I think wine? Salty, garlicy, buttery and delicious!
As the days flew by, it was soon time to say good bye to my lovely European Holiday and my lovely Brazilian boyfriend. We said our good byes not knowing what the future holds, with him off to Brazil and me off to travel for the next 6 months before I go to Brazil. I can only liken the sadness to a feeling I used to feel as a child: when I started school my dad took me to school everyday. Everyday, and I mean every single day I would cry and clutch onto his leg begging him not to leave me. The teacher, who must have herself be traumatised as to why this child hated her class so much, literally had to pry me from him in manner of prying a barnacle off a rock. I dont know why but I just felt complete terror at the prospect of being left at school for the entire day! For 2 whole years I did this, until I changed schools and went to another school with a more relaxed dress code and prettier natural setting. Leaving Henrique was like this, but it was like those 2 years of grief I felt as a child all rolled into one! Awful.
Anyway, we are the masters of our own destiny and right now I have the world to see! I flew into London, and I was reminded why I had the desire to leave London. I now find it difficult to believe I lived in this busy, dirty, cramped, ugly place! London is great if you have money and can enjoy the man made things it has to offer, but sooner or later - you get sick of this. So a quick stop in London to see a few friends, have a few medical check ups, shots (as in vaccinations), obtaining some visa's and picking up a new passport. Then I am off to Australia where I can hopefully find some work to boost my funds and take it from there!
